Krabi Beaches Guide
Ao Nang
Ao Nang is a huge bay with many picturesque beaches and tiny islands surrounding it. It is located at a distance of about 20 kms. from Krabi Town and app. 6 kms. away from Hat Noppharat Thara. Two of the popular beaches here are East Railay and West Railay. The cave, Tham Phra Nang, is a widely visited tourist spot. Most of the areas in and around Ao Nang can be reached by boat. Boats, canoes and kayaks are available for sightseeing excursions. Paddling tours for exploring the mangrove forests and water-filled caves along the coast is a hit with tourists. The islands of Koh Poda, Koh Kai, Koh Mo and Koh Thap are the most popular among tourists due to the presence of coral reefs and colorful fishes. It is an ideal location for diving and snorkeling. The influx of tourists to these spots has lead to the arrival of 4 and 5 star hotels and resorts in Ao Nang. They offer complete facilities for all the water activities in the area.
Railay Bay
Though the beach is divided into East and West, they offer totally different experience to the visitor. The West Railay is a peaceful beach with lots of sands, but fewer amenities. East Railay is in reality a mud flat, which is exposed during low tide. In addition to the beaches and mangrove forests, tourists can experience the high-energy cliff climbing activity. The limestone cliffs with the wonderful view of the sea have around 700 routes ranging from high to medium difficulty. These cliffs are located between Tham Phra Nang and Hat Railay East and also near the various islands close by.
Krabi Town
Krabi Town is a place worth spending a few days for the chance to explore its historical monuments and its proximity to many tourist attractions. The town has many Wats or temples - Tiger Cave Temple being the most famous. The town offers a range of accommodation, restaurants and shopping centers. The local markets are very colorful and worth a visit. Many popular tourist destinations like the Phang Nga Bay and Koh Phi Phi can be reached by day trip from Krabi. The tiny islands surrounding Krabi offer excellent opportunities for water sports. All these make it an ideal place to set up camp while exploring the surrounding areas. During the peak season when all the beaches and islands are overflowing with tourists, Krabi Town offer accommodation at reasonable rates. The added attraction being staying away from the crowd. Klong Muang Beach
This is Krabi’s newly developed five-star locality with many high-end hotels and resorts like Sheraton Krabi Resort, the Nakamanda and the Tubkaak Resort. The three-km beach is uncrowded with snow-white sand, frequented mostly by hotel guests, except for a few fishermen. At one end of the beach is located a small island which is home to seabirds. Numerous tiny islands can be spotted from here. The royal residence of the Princess lies to the south at Laem Ham Nak. The village here offers minimal facilities with a few restaurants and shops. There is not much nightlife here. Klong Muang is ideal for those who want to stay away from the crowd and enjoy the peace and serenity and also the excellent food and company of like-minded people. For a vibrant nightlife with loud music head to Ao Nang.
Tubkaak Beach
This beach is located 30 kms. away from Krabi Town and lies to the north of Klong Muang. It is uncrowded with soft sandy beach. Kao Hang Nak Natural Forest lies adjacent to the beach and it is worth going for a day trip here to have a closer look. The beach looks across the bewitching Koh Hong Islands.
Ao Nam Mao
Pronounced also as ‘Anamao’, it lies to the south of Ao Nang. East Railay is reachable by boat from here. The land area of Ao Nam Mao lies adjacent to Ao Nang and this has triggered the development of the area for residential purposes. Many projects are coming up in the main road connecting Ao Nang and Ao Nam Mao.
Koh Lanta
This huge island lies between Krabi and Phi Phi Island on the west coast of Andaman Sea. It is 30 kms. in length and 6 kms. in width and there are nine beaches along the sunset coast. These beaches with sugary sand offer fantastic views. There is almost 70 islands close by with plenty of coral reefs and colorful aquatic life. Though the island was hit by Tsunami, not much damage was done by it and things are normal around the place. None of the beaches or the diving locations got affected by this.
Phi Phi Island
One of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand, this island has everything a beach-loving tourist wants – crystal clear water, clean beaches, exotic aquatic life and adrenaline-pumping activities like cliff climbing. The place used to be known as Pulao Pi ah Pi, which is derived from Malay. It gradually developed into its present form of Phi Phi, though the letter ’h’ is silent in both the ‘Phi’s. The place got this name due to the mangrove forests present here in abundance. The Phi Phi Island is a group of six islands covering an area of 35 sq. kms. They are Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Ley, Biddah Nok, Biddah Nai, Yung, and Pai (Bamboo Island). These islands are part of the National Park set up in 1983.
Phi Phi Don Island
The island measures 8kms. in length and 3.5kms. in width and is spread over 28sq.kms. Cape Laem Tohng, located at the north end of the island is a good diving destination. The other diving site here is Hua Rah Ket at the south end of the island. Ton Sai and Loh Dalam, the two beautiful crescent-shaped bays have accommodation and other tourist facilities. The sea gypsy village of Chao Ley lies in Cape Laem Tohng. The sea gypsies are said to have come from Koh Lipeh lying in Tarutao National Park on the Malaysian border.
Phi Phi Lay Island
This small island became famous overnight through the film ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo Di Caprio. The film was shot on the beautiful Maya Bay here. Many sea gypsies inhabit this island. Along the cliffs here, swallow nests are found which are used to make the famous Bird’s Nest Soup. The numerous caves found around here have paintings and relics from pre-historic periods. The island is a treasure-trove for explorers as well as those who just want to laze around.
Noppharat Thara Beach
This 3-km beach, lined with coconuts and casuarinas, is located barely 6 kms from Ao Nang. The beach has white sand littered with small seashells all over. The beach used to known by the name Hat Khlong Haeng, which means dried canal beach. This name was given by locals due to fact that the canal dries up during low tide and the entire region will become an extra-long beach. Hat Noppharat Thara is the headquarters of the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park, which is spread over land and water. Phi Phi Island is reachable by ferry service, which runs throughout the year. Songthaews run from Krabi to the beach and charges 20 baht for the journey.
Hat Tham Phra Nang
This picturesque beach can be reached only by water. Its crystal clear water, sugar-white sand and extraordinary karsts attracts tourists throughout the year. In spite of this, it is wonder that the beach remains unspoilt and unaffected. It still retains the laid-back atmosphere and pristine beauty. A major portion of the beach is occupied by the luxury Rayavadee Resort. There are other accommodation facilities available in the vicinity to suit all budgets. Other attractions of the area are Phra Nang Lagoon, the Inner and Outer Phra Nang caves. The beauty and variety of the attractions here draw in thousands of tourists each year in spite of the lack of easy accessibility. This is a favorite spot for rock climbing, diving and snorkeling.
Koh Ngai
Koh Ngai, a part of the Koh Lanta National Marine Park, lies 13 kms. to the south of Koh Lanta. This tiny island of about 5 sq. kms. in area, is also known by the name of Koh Hai. The picture perfect beach with white sand and clear water and inland covered with forests attracts tourists in hordes. The main drawing card here is the presence of coral reefs surrounding the island. This makes the place perfect for diving and snorkeling. There are accommodation facilities for all budgets here, but fewer in number. Therefore, to avoid disappointment, it is advisable to book in advance. Due to this, the area is quiet and uncluttered. From Koh Ngai, day trips to nearby islands like Koh Chuek, Koh Waen, Koh Mah and Koh Muk can be arranged.
Poda Island (Koh Poda)
This is a private island owned by a resort. The blue water and sand-filled beach is excellent for lazing around. It is ideal for swimming and snorkeling and you get to see colorful and friendly fishes at close range. The tourists may walk-in for accommodation at the resort.
Yung Island
This island is located to the north of Phi Phi Don Island. It has exquisite variety of corals and also a beach filled with boulders.
Pai Island
This island is also located to the north of Phi Phi Don Island, closer to Koh Yung. Sand-filled beaches are there in the northern and eastern parts of the island. Chunky corals are present on the southern side of the island.
Chicken Island
Deriving its name from the rock formation resembling a fowl’s head, the island has high-rising cliffs on one end and beaches skirting the other peninsular end. The warm clear water provides good snorkeling prospects. During high tide, most of the peninsular portion is submerged in water creating a small island in the middle. The island is open to visitors throughout the year, even during the monsoon months. However, there are no accommodation facilities available in the island.
Koh Ha (Five Island)
Ha means five in Thai language. This is a group of five islands, lying on the west of Koh Lanta, at a distance of 25 kms. Actually, there are six islands, but one was left out while counting. Clear water with visibility exceeding 20 meters and abundance of underwater caves makes it an ideal diving spot. The caves have big mouths and are quite safe to enter. Inside the caves, you can surface and see the stalactites dripping from the cave roofs. The sunrays peeping through the cave entrance gives it a magical feeling.
Koh Rok
This is a set of two islands, namely, Koh Rok Nai and Koh Rok Nok. Koh Rok Nai has beautiful pristine beaches, coral reefs and steep cliffs. Koh Rok Nok has shallow coral reefs and beaches with white soft sand. Hat Thalu and Ao Man Sai are located at the end of this island. Speedboat trips to Koh Rok can be booked from Koh Lanta Yai. It is unsafe to venture here in long-tail boats.
Mu Koh Hong
This is a group of limestone islands consisting of Koh Lao or Koh Lao La Ding, Koh Lao Riam, Koh Pakka, Koh Sa Ka and Koh Hong or Koh Lao Li Pe. Koh Kong, which lies on the south, is the largest island in the group. These islands have picture-perfect beaches and both deep and shallow-water corals. The beautiful and colorful fishes seen in the water here makes it a favorite spot among tourists for all water-based activities like, snorkeling, diving and canoeing. The hiking trails on Koh Hong attract nature lovers in droves. Mu Koh Hong is reachable from Ao Nang by a one-hour boat ride. Than Bok Khorani National Park lies adjacent to it. The park charges 200 baht per person as entrance free and 20 baht for permission to camp on the island.
Taleng Beng Island
This limestone island has many small beautiful beaches and caves. These caves surface during low tide. Another attraction of the island is the presence of swallows. This island is similar of Koh Phi Phi Lay.
